WAW Wednesday ... "A stitch in time ..."

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. Tim Tam, Director of the Amarillo, Texas-based ministry. "Through our relationships, God reveals needs and opportunities for service. As we come along side the poor, new friendships develop and doors for ministry open. As we serve, God provides the resources to supply for the needs he reveals."

WAW Wednesday: "A stitch in time ..."

Dear Friends,

We've been talking a lot about "back to school" around our offices these past couple of weeks ...

Asher Started Preschool

He's been coming to work with his mom, Jo (our amazing Team Coordinator), since he was just a few months old. We celebrated the milestone, and also realized once again how quickly time slips by ...

Meanwhile in Belize, Kenny & Chepito have been helping teachers get their libraries set up with donated text books and reading materials that many of you have shared with us -- thank you!

OH -- and they've helped put the classrooms together in the new Preschool in Valley of Peace! That's right - the school passed inspection and is open for business! We hear Chepito's son Matteo started preschool also - I think he might be in one of these photos!

Our Belize Scholarship Committee is reviewing our Scholarship Program. Students across Belize are attending primary, secondary, and trade schools because of our friends in the U.S. who are dedicated to improving lives through education!

We've read letters from program recipients - their thrill of having a chance to go to school is inspiring. One student shared, "...even though I don't know your name, I thank you and send you my love because yo have shown your special love to each one of us. Thank you, thank you, and I hope to do the same when I grow up, to help people in need; because God's Word says we can do everything through Christ who strengthens us!"

We've been conspiring about scooping up clearance back-to-school items to ship to Belize -- maybe you've found a great deal? We're lining out shipping container schedules soon - please let Tim Hagen know if you've got school supplies that might be included in our next shipment.

Many Are Learning New Skills

Pedro and Maria Perez, our business development partners in Belize and directors of Christian Sewing Partners of Belize (CSPB), sent us an encouraging report recently about expansion into Southern Belize:

"We were able to start the sewing program in Santa Cruz and Santa Elena with the Rio Blanco Women's group (a beautiful water fall is there) where they have electricity from solar. The program has around 15 ladies and they are right into it.

Maria is pictured (above) with women in the Rio Blanco village (Toledo District) - - 25 women from 2 villages meet together; pray together; and encourage one another. Maria and Pedro delivered machines and material that TWAW donors provided! Students learned about machine maintenance and more.

The building at Santa Rosa (shown below) should be completed next week and in the first instance we will run electricity from the church to the sewing center. As we move we will get our own meter. Since this training center is central to all the programs we now have in the South we will embark on training initiatives; we want to use this as a sewing center and craft training for the area. Team members from the U.S. trained in pottery, leather, lathe, may want to come for short periods to train there. I am also exploring to piggy back with a new program that is planning to work in the area to develop women in crafts and arts."

In Santa Rosa the group hasn't met this summer because they were busy making school uniforms in their homes. Imagine using treadle machines--if you've got one in your attic it could easily be put to good use in these remote areas of Belize where electricity can be scarce!

Maria shares, "We thank God for the opportunity of working with all ethnic groups of Belize!"

The Perez's are looking forward to a visit from Erin & Brad Willcutt from Pascagoula, MS -- the Willcutt's are feeling led to use their gifts to help with bringing the items that are created through CSPB to market where they can benefit the participants even further. Would you please pray with us that doors would open for their efforts?

Prayers for Hurricane Relief

We are praying with so many families from Belize who have loved ones in the areas devastated by hurricane Harvey - - and now here comes Irma, to another area where many Belize friends live. We are really encouraged by the stories of God's Church on the move to help -- and we look forward to connecting resources in the long rebuild ahead.

Pray for those in desperate need.
Pray for thoughtful and effective responses.
Pray for us as we try to coordinate with our friends and partners already on site.

Blessings,
Tim Tam

WAW Wednesday ... "Right Now in Belize"

WAW Wednesday: "Right Now in Belize!"

Dear Friends,

July is an incredibly full month for us as we have teams from Texas, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico traveling to Belize to serve along side their friends. Here's an up-to-the-minute report from Tim Hagen, currently working with Chepito in VOP:

Our group from St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Amarillo, TX ( with parishioners from other churches in the Diocese of Amarillo) has just finished their second day partnering with Our Lady of Peace in Valley of Peace, Belize. The team is spending time teaching and playing with kids from the church, remodeling a building on the church property, and spending time with their friends.

Fr. Christopher Schwind will be busy this week celebrating mass each night, offering reconciliation (confession), and anointing the sick. He will preside over a funeral mass tomorrow as well as celebrate a baptism and a Quinceanera on Sunday.

Families in VOP continue to demonstrate God's love by serving along side the team and opening their homes and lives to us. Our common faith transcends small cultural differences.

Later in the week the will have an opportunity to celebrate God's provision for a family who lost their house to fire in March of this year. Our Lady of Peace and St Mary's partnered to care for the family in their distress. The team will be able to see the new house--better than before--finished and ready to receive the family again. God is good!

There's a lot going on in Belize this month. Please pray that God will be glorified by the efforts of our friends and partners.

Praise God with us for each and every commitment we received during our #wearethewordatwork fundraising campaign!

Kenny and Tim Tam are getting ready for teams arriving this weekend - please pray for safe travel and supernatural energy!

TWAW recently submitted a grant application to USAid. If we were selected, the grant would provide our Redemptive Recycling Program with funds to ship several containers over the next couple of years! Please pray with us that our application might be selected. We hope to hear a decision by July 25.

We are anxious to hear what comes out of your prayers. Feel free to email me back – or use this card and send it in.

We’ve reached 30% of our annual goal as of today!

Please Pray if you’ve not made a commitment and Give as you are led; and, Go with us to Belize soon! Together we are the Word at Work!

Gratefully,
Tim Tam

WAW Wednesday: "Are we there yet???"

Hello Friends,

Mollie here - I know you're anxious to hear more from our founder Tim Tam - stay tuned for more from him next week, please!

In the meantime, I thought I'd share some pix and update you on happenings recently in Belize ...

This week Kenny is leading a team of physical therapists from Twenty-six:12, an organization that encourages service by providing opportunities for those employed by Accolade Home Health. The team is traveling all over Belize, seeing patients who are under care of Belize Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation. They'll also train volunteers and caregivers to keep the therapy going. We're really grateful for this partnership!!!

You may not recognize this fellow -- that's Pastor Marvin Meza from Ebenezer Church in the Burial Grounds. What's he doing up there? Preparing forms for the roof beam on the new church building! We are beyond excited for this new building to become a reality!

And this lovely lady? Yup, that's Pastor Phillipa Miller from Exodus Church in the Pickstock neighborhood of Belize City! The kids at Easter VBS had a blast (and so did Phil) playing on the inflatable that was donated to TWAW by our friends the Straub's in Paoli, Pennsylvania.

It sort of feels like the calm before the storm around here -- anxious for Tim Tam to be back and for all God will do through our U.S. teams and Belize partners in the coming weeks and months. Our summer teams are forming and training has begun - we'd appreciate your prayers for them!

Blessings, Mollie

WAW Wednesday ... "4.12.17 The Beauty of the Cross"

WAW Wednesday: "4.12.17  The Beauty of the Cross"

Hello Friends,

During Tim Tam's sabbatical, countless friends and partners have inquired about Tim -- how is he? will he be back? WHEN will he be back? Kenny sent me this photo of our long-time friend, Frank Lizama (in photo, below), today and as I forwarded it to Tim I was reminded of how precious these relationships and friendships are -- not only to us, but to God. We were created for them, and He is so pleased when we have healthy relationships with Him - with others - with creation - and with ourselves!

Recently (ironically?) my husband, Mike, and I purchased one of Frank's "Y" Crosses. Frank says he designed it prayerfully as he contemplated the question, "Why did Christ have to die for me?"

During this Holy Week, I'm asking myself that question. It's weighty.

There's need in the world.
     Poverty because of broken relationships.
In Jesus' obedience on the Cross we are offered redemption.
And we love as He loved in response - as best we can through our words and our actions.

The beauty of Christ crucified is the Resurrection.

The beauty of alleviating poverty is
     redemption
          restoration
               love

As we celebrate Easter, I'm praying we each remember and proclaim the beauty of the work of the Cross.

That in our gratitude for the gift of His grace we'll be obedient to His call to serve.

May the examples of our brothers and sisters spur us on to the good works which God has prepared for us to do.

May the Holy Spirit ignite in each of us the gifts he's shared --

May His Word come to life in us.

May His work on the cross spur us on to be the Word at work.

Happy, Easter, friends,

Mollie
The Word at Work

Hello Friends,

Growing up, April Fools' Day was a lot of fun - it was a day to dream up the most fantastic stories possible and attempt to sway friends and family to believe them - and as the youngest and only daughter, my brothers may or may not have found me to be quite gullible!

Since October we've been looking forward to April 1 when Tim Tam returns to TWAW - and we've laughed several times at the irony of the date!

Rest assured, friends, Tim's return is not an elaborate April Fools' prank! Here he is now:

Six months of sabbatical has flown by.

But wow, what a sabbatical!!!!!!!

I don't believe I've ever felt this great, or felt this close to God, or felt this much love for my wife and kids. The plan now it's to come back out of orbit slowly and carefully so I don't burn up on reentry. I was able to meet with Mollie this afternoon and begin to catch up on all the wonderful things that have happened with TWAW in my absence.

All in all, this last six months was a wonderful gift from God for me personally and yet another great gift was to see how TWAW was able to flourish in my absence because God has blessed us with such capable and competent staff.

These are merely my first few words. I'll be sharing more soon and even making occasional appearances as I re-acclimate. This afternoon Mollie was a bit frightened by my appearance and has suggested that like Moses when he came down from the mountain I wear a veil till my glowing aura dies down (recent photo below).

On Thursday, March 30, our beloved sister (and amazing trip coordinator / administrator) Jo Cole, and her husband, Chad, suffered a profound loss as their 18-week-old daughter Zoey was born too soon. We ask that you cover the Cole's and their 3-year-old son, Asher, in prayer for comfort and peace and a special measure of the awareness of the hope of the Resurrection that we'll celebrate in just a couple of weeks. Jo continues to heal at home.

Pastor Phillipa (Exodus Ministries) was in an automobile accident Monday - she was a bit banged up, but walked away whole! Keep praying over Phillipa and all of the Herrera family (Leonie, Stanley, their mother) as they recover from attacks on their health.

Dallan is healing slowly but surely. Pray for encouragement for Dallan - for friends to come around him and keep his spirits up - and praise God for making all the connections a year ago that led to his life-saving surgery. We praise God for the funding He has provided and trust for His provision for what's left owing.

We truly had an incredible March with teams in Belize! Praise God for how he uses us as his hands and feet! Pray for the relationships that began or were renewed - that they would bring glory to God and continue to reveal glimpses of the kingdom to us!

Our summer trip board is full of teams! We're grateful so many will join us in Belize - please pray for our staff as we discern leadership assignments and make preparation.

Finally, we're excited for Tim Tam to return - pray we don't overwhelm him with all the good stuff we have to share! We're grateful he's had this time and we can't wait to hear what God has revealed to him during sabbatical!

Gratefully,

Mollie and the Staff
The Word at Work

WAW Wednesday ... "March Madness"

WAW Wednesday: "March Madness"

Hello Friends,

Taking a deep breath after a very full Spring Break in Belize -- which included a coffee spill on my computer -- thankfully I'm back online today and can share some of what our teams experienced while here. One thing is for sure, God is present and His blessings abound!

Our group from FPC Midland returned to the community of El Progresso last week and continued work on their Community Center...they also had a fun day with the bouncy house one of our partners from PA donated. By all reports the team had a great time and their long-term plant, Susie Mauldin, was also able to join them for their debrief! We love seeing God work through this relationship!

Lakeside Presbyterian Church out of Mississippi had a unique vision trip this spring break - Tim Hagen led the group North, South, and West to meet partners and discern God's leading as they've made a 10-year commitment to serving in Belize! (Lakeside's pastor is Tyson Taylor, a familiar face in Belize!) The team was also the answer to our friend A.H.'s prayer for a wheelchair ramp. A.H. is now able to drive his motorized wheelchair in and out of his home and we are so grateful!

Chepito led the team from FPC Arlington and they had a great time reconnecting with the girls and staff from Youth Enhancement Services (YES). The group brought craft and sewing projects and also re-painted the building. FPC leader Suzy McCoy shared that she helped put the first coat of paint on the building 10 years ago on her first trip to Belize, affirming how God honors relationships. The group had a field trip with the girls, taking them to Banana Bank for a day of fun. This team was able to join CPC Austin for a night of prayer and worship at Old Belize - we were reminded how big the Church is as we learned a couple of African worship songs from one of Arlington's team members! It was a great night.

We are so excited that CPC Austin and Ebenezer are gaining ground for the sake of the Gospel in the Burial Grounds of Belize City. The members of Ebenezer have been working hard to build their church and CPC Austin helped them gain major ground this week - on Thursday we were able to join them for their first night of worship in the new (nearly complete) building and it was beautiful! Soon the church will have a building to teach children about God's love, provide food and sewing classes and so much more. The team from Austin also made hospice visits, went door - to - door to invite folks to Ebenezer, participated in a feeding program near Port Loyola, and visited the prison where they had a special tour from John Woods.

This morning I caught up with Christian Sewing Partners of Belize's organizer Maria Perez, TWAW long-term volunteer Marilyn, and her guest Pat from Kansas, as they were loading up and heading North to share new projects with a sewing group -- they've been all over the country, in the prison, schools, and wherever God leads them. What an inspiration they are!

There's more friends - but I'm off to the next thing! Thank you for your prayers -- we're grateful to every team member that joined us for TWAW's March Madness and we're expectant for what God will do next!

Gratefully,

Mollie and the Staff

Hello Friends,

I'm so thankful to share with you exciting progress and photos this week!

First -- many of you will recognize this worksite in Shawville -- it's Omega's Hill where teams have spent countless hours working to prepare for this day! The foundation was poured yesterday and plans for moving forward are prayerfully being made with Pastor Eugenia. We're grateful for God's vision for this church and for so many who have partnered in the work. Please keep Omega covered in prayer as they make the transition to this location.

This photo tells a beautiful story! Many of you will recognize Derrick & Pastor Phillipa Miller from Exodus Ministries in Belize below -- they Miller's made a trip to Hickory, NC last weekend to visit Discovery Church and share vision for a reverse mission trip that's planned for August 2017! This is a great example of relationships going deeper - the leadership team from Exodus is anxious to join Discovery in offering VBS Belize style this summer. Please pray that the youth who have raised funds for their Visa's will be approved for travel to the States.

(The Miller's are pictured here with Don & Susan Hefner and their daughters who have been instrumental in facilitating this "reverse mission trip.")

These are scenes from last week with our team from Christ the King Church in MI...Pouring floors in Valley of Peace, enjoying meals together and fellowship, and painting Marla's House of Hope. Pastor Larry Hayward presented a 3-day marriage seminar in Belmopan as well. It was a great week serving together!

\Thank you for your time - and for your prayers for our team currently on the ground in VOP where they are painting the preschool and having a great time with the VOP kids.

Groups start arriving next week - we're looking forward to all God has in store for us! Together we surely are the Word at Work!

Happy New Year!

Hello Friends,

Today we gathered as a Staff for the first time in 2017 -- we spent time catching up, laughing about some of the crazy things that happened last year, and sharing our hopes and concerns for the year to come.

We prayed for our Board of Directors as they prepare for their annual meeting in Belize next week.

We asked that God would continue to bless Tim Tam on his sabbatical.

We thanked God for our partners in Belize and the U.S. who are putting their faith into action.

We praised God for His provision through our donors and for how so many are cared for because of the self-sacrifice of others.

We asked for wisdom, mercy, and direction in the coming year.

Would you please join us in these prayers?

Gratefully,

Mollie and the Staff
The Word at Work

P.S. Tomorrow, Tim Hagen will head off to Belize and get ready to receive his home church, St. Mary's Catholic Church of Amarillo. His team is excited to return to the Valley of Peace and see their friends there!
