WAW Weekend: Help Us Save Lives in Belize

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. Tim Tam, Director of the Amarillo, Texas-based ministry. "Through our relationships, God reveals needs and opportunities for service. As we come along side the poor, new friendships develop and doors for ministry open. As we serve, God provides the resources to supply for the needs he reveals."

Help Us Save Lives in Belize

Friends,
*** We have been given a great blessing that
will help save infants and adults in Belize! ***

We were recently made aware that KHMH, the hospital in Belize City, is in DIRE NEED of ventilators ... The Pediatric physician at KHMH shares, "We are being put in the extreme position of having to play God, deciding who will live or die based on our lack of this equipment. Nurses are literally taking shifts 24 / 7 to manually ventilate patients."

A donor has come forward with ventilators that can be shipped immediately to Belize in a container that will also hold a vehicle donated to Belize Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation, hospital beds, oxygen concentrators and other medical supplies that are so scarce in Belize. The container is ready to ship from Arlington, Texas - would you please help us get it shipped right away? Cost of shipping this priceless equipment is $8,000 USD ...would you consider asking your small group of Sunday school class to help us? Please email me if you can help.

We've had an incredibly blessed couple of weeks here in Belize with several teams coming alongside our Belizean partners in powerful ways. Today I want to highlight our ongoing water project ... it's our goal to make Belize the first country in the world to have potable water for every person. We recently received a call from St. Margaret's Village Chairman pleading for help as many in their community were ill due to lack of clean water. Our response was swift and members of two teams traveled with Jose Valencia to deliver filters to over 200 families.

Another team will return next week to deliver 40 more filters ... BUT, more and most importantly, this community has heard the Good News of Christ and the Living Water only He can provide. These filters are a unique and meaningful tool to change lives! The Chairman called Jose last night to thank us for bringing fresh water to his village and he said the families are incredibly happy! Thank you for helping make our goal a reality. Please let me know if you would like to help us in this outreach, we'll have more filters going out with teams over the summer!!

The King's Children's Home is gathering eggs ... lots of them! The layers are producing over 100 eggs a day! Thank you to everyone who helped make this dream a reality!! (We hear there are a couple of turkeys, too; and 100 broiler chicks are settling in to their new home!)

This month we've also been blessed by the work of long-term volunteers Marilyn Stewart and Kent Sappenfield, and team leader/videographer Kurt Oheim. We are inspired by their service and love for Belize! Is God calling you?? I'd love to talk more with you about where you can serve!

Our Board of Directors has just completed a whirlwind tour in Belize, meeting our partners and getting updated on project progress ... would you please lift them in prayer as they continue to work and discern God's will for The Word at Work? Thanks

FPC-Midland Mission to Belize: Video: "Give a Kid a GoPro"

First Presbyterian of Midland, Texas, traveled to Belize over spring break with a team of children, youth, and adults. We hosted a "field day" on "Barron Bliss Day" (like presidents day) as kids were out of school. We had a blast and GoPro cameras captured the fun!

What you see is what happens when you put the GoPro in the hands of the kids!

Belize Misson Trip Day 5

Today, Thursday, we started off the day with a great breakfast as usual. About half of the team went to Belize city and visited various sites such as an orphanage, the burial grounds (a poor section of Belize city), and a single mothers caring center. The other half of the team continued at the worksite and accomplished a lot. We completed the roof, the walls inside, and the doors. We are close to finishing!
Tomorrow morning we will put the door knobs on the door and dedicate the home to the family. Some of the ladies on our team continued teaching and helping out the principal at the school. The youth on our team put on a puppet show based on the story of Easter, which the kids fully enjoyed. Today was also our last full day of working on the building site. We will complete just a few finishing touches tomorrow and then explore some Mayan ruins in the village along with a jungle/cave tour. Next we will make our way to the island via boat. We are so sad to see our time in the village come to an end, but our hearts are full with new friendships that we will never forget.

Day 4

In El progresso today, Wednesday, the 4 women continued another day of teaching at the school in the absence of a teacher. The children love to have recess and are grateful they are able to go to school because not all the children are able to.

At the work sight, they put in the shutters, roofing, and dug through the hard rock to complete the septic hole. At lunch, barriers were broken as people from both groups share their testimonies. We had moved from being their guests to being a family and united in Christ. Our relationships with them have been developing deeper with each other and we are learning most everybody name in the village.

We also discovered there is a "poisonous tree" that through the air can make someone swell up like a balloon. Some of our team have had pretty bad cases of swelling and look different. It was a scare this morning when one of the team, Morgan, woke up with a big face and eyes almost shut from swelling.

Each night ends with us gathering on the porch of our accommodations to sing, pray, share, and continue to realize that Christ calls us to see that He who is in us is greater than he that is in the world.

Day 3

Today, Tuesday, we woke up to fog and good weather. We headed out to El progresso at around 7am, but made a pit stop at the local farmers market. It was a good place to see the people of San Ignacio (the place we are staying) and get local fruit.
When we arrived in El Progresso, the team worked hard to get the siding and roof frame up. The house is almost complete with a kitchen and 3 bedrooms for 7 kids and the parents. The men from the village help so much and everyone in El Progresso is so grateful Pastor Carlos is getting a house for him and his family.
This morning, 4 women from our team, 2 teachers, and 1 Spanish speaker, went to meet with the school principal about a puppet show we are planning for later this week. They found out about a dilemma the principal had dealing with a couple of teachers that were not at school today. He was about to send the kids home for the day. Our team couldn't help but step in and teach the kids for the day and were put in a situation with 25 kids and no lesson plan for the rest of the day. God used the talents of some of the women on our team to bless the kids with an awesome science lesson and good music. The local women made us a great meal of a lot of rice and beans, chicken, and salsa. They fed all of the workers good fruit and kept all of us hydrated on coconut milk/water.

FPC-Midland Mission to Belize: Our Mission Partner

Our Mission Partner

Some members of the First Prez mission team have experience with Belize through service on previous missions ... others will be making their first visit to that nation. Others are somewhere in between, with a brief visit of a day or a short span of days that afforded a tantalizing glimpse of what lay just outside thir vision, just around that next bend in the road, on the other side of that next hill ... not so much scratching the surface of Belize ... but just scratching the surface of 'scratching the surface.'

Fortunately, First Presbyterian Church of Midland is partnering with a ministry that has a long, deep acquaintance with the nation, its people and their needs. And not only that, they're a neighbor of sorts, headquartered 'just up the road' from Midland.

"Simply put, we're a bridge connecting resources with needs, and churches and people with opportunities to serve."

"The birth of our ministry came from the conviction that Christians need to put what they hear into practice in obedience to Jesus and His word. As we put our faith into practice (putting God's Word to work), and give ourselves away in mission, we ourselves are transformed."

Among the valuable insights that The Word at Work provides its visiting partners, is that there is more to their mission than simply bricks-and-mortar.

God has revealed to us an entire host of people and places in Belize that need the regenerative touch of His hand. So, we are obedient to Jesus' call on our lives," Tam explains. "We run short term mission trips for groups of people from churches of all denominations from the USA to Belize, Central America."

"Relationships are central to the Gospel with which we are entrusted. God is at work in Belize and He calls us to join Him in that work, empowering us in a unique way to match needs and resources. We are honored to have hundreds of friends in Belize who teach us about service each time we travel there with a team. Our work complements, adapts, supplements, and encourages Belizean ministries in their work for those in need.

Day 2

Today, Monday, we woke up around 6 and ate a breakfast that consisted of tortillas, beans (which we have every meal), omelets, banana bread, and pineapple juice. Next, we made our way to the village of El Progresso and started our building project. Today was a national holiday in Belize called Baron Bliss day, which meant all of the kids were out of school. We helped them make kites and they ran around and played in the field. The kids also played on the bounce house and slipping slide. The weather today was very hot with a high of 91 and a low of 66. There was only a little bit of rain. Half of our team played with the children today, while the other half of us worked on the house. The house is going to be for a local preacher and his family which consists of his wife and seven kids. By the end of the day, our team had completed the framing on the house along with a 5 feet deep hole for the septic tank. We are all very proud of our progress!
The second half of us were at the school having a blast with the children. The bounce house was very popular among the children along with the go pros! The women of the village cooked lunch for everyone which was delicious. They cooked enchiladas, tostadas, and BBQ chicken. We formed great relationships with all of the children. They are all so excited for us to be here with them. We returned back to San Ignacio around 5:30 after a hard day of trabajando (working).
Tonight for dinner we ate rice, pork, salad, and homemade REALLY REALLY good biscuits (if you can't tell we love the food here). We all gathered around in a circle, sang, and shared our favorite part of the day and where we saw God working in our lives today.

FPC-Midland Mission to Belize: Where We Are - The Culture

WHERE WE ARE - THE CULTURE

An Overview of Belize
(from The Word at Work ministry)

Belize is located in the southern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula, bordering Mexico and Guatemala, with the Caribbean Sea to the east. The coast is at-or-below sea-level with swamps, mangroves, lagoons and sandy beaches. The Maya mountain range lies to the west and south, rising to over 3,000 feet at some peaks. The capitol, Belmopan, is in the center of Belize, near the Maya Mountain foothills.

History

The center of the Mayan empire for almost 1,000 years, the Spanish arrived in the 16th century and used the area primarily for logging. During the next two hundred years, many British and Spanish pirates inhabited the area, battling for naval supremacy. Finally in 1798, the British navy defeated the Spanish and laid official claim to the area. In 1862, Britain formally named the territory “British Honduras,” a title that lasted until 1962 when a peaceful independence was granted and British Honduras became Belize. The country gained full independence by 1982. As of 2012, an estimated 324,000 people lived in Belize.

Language

Belize is the only country in Central America where English is their official language. Creole is often spoken among the locals, along with Spanish in the western region near the Guatemalan border, and in the north near the Mexican border.

Currency

Belize's dollar value is tied to the United States dollar. Two Belizean dollars equal one U.S. dollar, and either currency can be used. Belizean banks are still not connected to the international banking system, so Americans can not use the ATM's. Most hotels and restaurants accept Visa and MasterCard.

Economy

Belize's economy is seeing steady growth due to an increase in international tourism. Its jungles are touted as destinations for eco-lodges. And being located next to the world's second longest barrier reef makes it a great destination for scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing. The per capita income, however, is just over $3,000USD per year.

Food

Most of the food in Belize is traditional Latin American (chicken, rice and beans, and enchiladas), with some Caribbean, Creole and Chinese. Most restaurants serve a good variety of foods, from chicken to steak to shrimp and a variety of fish, and even pizza. Local fruits, such as mangoes, bananas and pineapples are widely available and taste great.

Religion

The majority of Belizeans declare some sort of faith. Many are Roman Catholic, while Christian Protestantism continues to grow. Jehovah's Witnesses, Hindu and Voodoo are also practiced.

Day 1

Today, Sunday, was the first day for the whole team to go to El Progresso where we will be building a preachers home all week and building relationships with the wonderful people of the village. When we arrive at the village, the people of the church welcomed us with open arms and greetings. The children speak both English and Spanish well and we listened to songs in Spanish that the kids sang.
After church this morning, we had a while of free time and decided to visit the Mayan ruins.
We met a lady that works with women that have gone through domestic violence or have gone through life threatening diseases. The women are In a sowing group where they make things such as satchels, bags, ties, and jewelry to have a learned skill for the women that have gone through a lot. A pastor we met shared his story to us about being called into ministry, quitting his high paid job to preach in a church of 6. The church has grown over the past 5 years and now teach groups of high school students welding and wood shopping. They have no tools but they know that God will provide and work wonders in their church.

Arrival Day

Airport: Today at the airport we landed safely, went through customs easy. It poured rain, and we found ice cream at the airport that was super good. When we landed the airport the air was warm and there was a lot of humidity. Wildlife: Today we saw cows an horses tied up on the side of the road, we saw a ton of random dogs, a lizard, cockroach, roosters, chickens, ducks, turkeys, frogs, and birds.
Transportation: The Trip was long, bumpy, and rainy. The laws are different when you're turning left here. Unlike somebody would think a Central America country would belike, signs such as advertising signs are a lot like the ones in America. As we pass "supermarket" you can tell there is much less selection in the stores are totally different overall. we passed a lot of stands selling fruit because coconuts, mangos, bananas, and many more fruits are plentiful and easy to grow. The Resort: Its so pretty here, its green and there are animals everywhere. The place where we are staying is cute and small. We went swimming in the river today, it was super fun. The place is a huge hut, there is a patio where we have been singing songs and talking about our day and everything that has happened.

FPC-Midland Mission to Belize: Where We Are - The Country

WHERE WE ARE - THE COUNTRY

An Overview of Belize
(from The Word at Work ministry)

Belize is located in the southern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula, bordering Mexico and Guatemala, with the Caribbean Sea to the east. The coast is at-or-below sea-level with swamps, mangroves, lagoons and sandy beaches. The Maya mountain range lies to the west and south, rising to over 3,000 feet at some peaks. The capitol, Belmopan, is in the center of Belize, near the Maya Mountain foothills, with Banana Bank and the El Salvadorian refugee settlement (called The Valley of Peace) right nearby.

Belize City, over 300 years old and the country's main commercial area and seaport, is the largest city with over 80,000 residents. The Burial Grounds is on the northern outskirts of the city where TWAW does a significant amount of ministry. This is also where St. Andrews Presbyterian Church is located (one of our ministry partners). Other areas of TWAW activity include Orange Walk and Corozal to the north.

Many come to vacation in Belize for its beautiful beaches, casinos, scuba diving off the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world, and its smattering of quaint islands. We spend 1 of the 8 days on TWAW mission trips recuperating and reflecting on the past week on a private island right near the barrier reef.

Climate

Belize has what's called a subtropical climate the entire year. The rainy season lasts from late-August through November, followed by a dry season from December through March. Normal highs all year are 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit, while temperatures never drop below the mid-60's. However, your comfort has something to do with where you'll be serving... Belize City is on the Caribbean, so the sea breeze keeps things feeling a bit cooler. If you're in the jungle regions of central Belize there is no breeze to speak of, so it does feel a bit warmer.

WAW Wednesdays: Grateful - Pondering

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. Tim Tam, Director of the Amarillo, Texas-based ministry. "Through our relationships, God reveals needs and opportunities for service. As we come along side the poor, new friendships develop and doors for ministry open. As we serve, God provides the resources to supply for the needs he reveals."

Grateful - Pondering

Good evening, friends,

Last week was the 2 year anniversary of our accident. We took a trip to visit the accident site. It was an eerie but good time to ponder “why did God spare our lives? How were we used in this past 2 years? Why are we still here?” One easy answer which I just preached on Sunday in Mississippi……”We are his workmanship, created for good works in Christ.” Eph. 2:10

We're grateful to each of you who prayed us through a desperate time, and we're awed by God's goodness as he has continued to heal us and prepare us for the work He has ahead of us.

While in Mississippi with Kenny this past week, we visited with Rev Matt Mitchell, former TWAW board member, at his church, 1st Pres. Pascagoula MS and with Drew Allen, current board member, at his church, First Presbyterian, Oceans springs MS. We met with teams, encouraged support for TWAW and our ministry and visited our coastal warehouse and shipping center.

Meanwhile, back in Amarillo, there was a reunion happening with Ladeni and Grace as they met with Dr. Keith Bjork and Chad Mason from Amarillo Artificial Limb & Joint, making adjustments as Ladeni returns to the new life God has provided! We're thankful for Neva Burks and so many others who have extended their lives to help our friends.

We continue to praise God for the healing happening in Gabryella's body as well - please let us know if you're willing to help financially with Gabryella's treatment - we expect her to be in Amarillo for several more weeks.

Thank you for answering our message from last week -we've had several responses for technology - including iPhones for our ministry and electronic keyboard's to allow the gift of music to permeate our Belizean friends lives and ministries.

In Belize, Marilyn Stewart has been traveling the country with Maria Perez, visiting sewing co-ops, encouraging the women whose lives are being changed by learning a skill, all the while being infused with the life changing message of the Gospel.

We also received good news that Leonie Gillham's biopsy results were negative for cancer!! Praise God for this gift; and praise Him for our sister who has devoted her life to caring for so many children at King's Children's Home!!!

Finally, I find myself daring to ask the question, "what are you doing to help change the lives of others?" A group of Amarillo High School students have answered this question by taking on a huge fundraising project, selling t-shirts to raise money for scholarships for students in Belize. They've done remarkably well, and I'm asking you to support them ... please follow this link to order a t-shirt before the end of the week ... saber es poder ... knowledge is power! We're amazed at this truth as knowledge of how to answer God's call, tempered with love, transforms our lives and the lives of others. Grateful & Expectant,

TT (Tim Tam)

Spring Break 2015 Belize

In just a few days, our team sets out to Belize and the ministry that awaits us at El Progresso. We are so thankful that the Holy Spirit has nudged us toward being a part of what the Lord is doing in Belize. As we prepare to be gone for a week, we are enjoying time with our families, frantically trying to get personal and professional things covered for next week, and considering what it will take to pack and be ready to leave on Saturday. The anticipation before a mission trip is very exciting. What is the Lord doing in Belize? What will happen in my heart, soul, and spirit during the trip? We are so thankful for all of the people supporting us and following our journey. You are all truly co-participants in our journey. The Bible talks about being covered by a cloud of witness and we know that we go nowhere by accident and we go nowhere alone. The Body of Christ goes with us.
